Smarter Routing Privacy Policy
Effective July 30, 2026
Smarter Routing is designed to help you compare driving-route tradeoffs and ask questions about a planned route. It does not require a personally identifying account, show advertising, sell personal information, or use cross-app tracking.
Information used to provide the app
When you plan a trip, the app may use a location you enter or your current location, the route geometry, planned departure time, route preferences, and questions you ask. These details are used to calculate routes and retrieve relevant real-time information such as reported road work and weather conditions.
If you use voice input, Apple’s speech-recognition services may process your audio under Apple’s terms. Smarter Routing receives the resulting text so it can answer your route question.
To answer natural-language route questions, Smarter Routing may send the question text and a compact fact packet about the selected route to OpenAI. The packet can include the route name, distance, duration, toll status, summarized route warnings, sampled weather, source coverage, and confidence. It does not include your GPS coordinates, route geometry, or approved stops. Questions asking for your current location and straightforward route calculations are handled on the iPhone.
If you use prepaid AI credits, the app creates a random wallet identifier and Apple processes the In-App Purchase. Smarter Routing may retain the wallet identifier, product and transaction identifiers, credit balance, and AI credit debits to deliver credits, prevent duplicate redemption, and resolve purchase problems. It does not receive your full payment-card details from Apple.
Processing and retention
Route-intelligence requests are processed only to return the requested result. The Smarter Routing service does not create user profiles or intentionally retain route requests, questions, or precise locations. Standard infrastructure security logs may temporarily contain technical information such as request time and network address.
OpenAI API requests are sent with response storage disabled and are not used to train OpenAI models by default. OpenAI may retain API abuse-monitoring logs containing question text for up to 30 days unless a shorter approved retention control applies to the service account.
Purchase and wallet records may be kept for as long as needed to preserve non-expiring credits, meet accounting obligations, prevent fraud, and support customer requests.
Other apps and data providers
If you choose to hand a route to Apple Maps, Google Maps, or Waze, that app’s privacy policy applies. Weather and road-condition results may come from public agencies such as the National Weather Service and state transportation departments. OpenAI processes eligible question text under its privacy policy.
Your choices
You can plan from typed locations without granting current-location access. Microphone and speech-recognition access are optional and can be changed in iOS Settings. Straightforward calculations and common question types can be handled on the iPhone; broader free-form answers may be unavailable when the AI service cannot be reached.
